Exotic mosquitoes and tropical viruses in Germany

A new mosquito species and three African mosquito-borne diseases have recently been identified in Germany.

With the immigrated Asian rock pool mosquito (Ochlerotatus japonicus), Germany now lists 48 different species of mosquitoes. Furthermore, the Sindbis-, Batai-, and Usutu viruses have been identified in different mosquitos. These Africa and Asia-based viruses can cause fever and influenza-like symptoms. Owing to the medical surroundings in Germany however, epidemic situations are most unlikely.

Experts name Globalization and change of climate as the main reasons for the increasing number of tropical insects that settle and survive in Germany.
